Selectgroup is an independent, family run business in Hull that runs IT for other Hull and East Yorkshire businesses, secures it, and builds the software they cannot buy off a shelf. Same city, same owners, since 1989.
What we actually do
Three things, and the combination is the point. We run the day to day IT for businesses that do not have an IT department. We do the security work that stops most of what is aimed at businesses your size. And we build business software when the process you have is the reason customers use you and no package will fit it.
The combination sits with one team rather than three suppliers, which changes the conversation. When a client tells us something takes four people two days a month, we are not limited to making the computers running it slightly faster. The people who would build them a better way of doing it are the same people who answer the phone when their laptop will not start.
Where the name comes from
Selectgroup began as two companies. Select Business Products did the IT, and Select Management Information Systems was the development side, writing the software. That is where the group name comes from. Everything runs through Select Business Products now, but the two halves are still what we do.
It is also why we can do both properly. Most IT companies added software later, or refer it elsewhere. We had a separate development company from 1994, before anyone was calling it a service.
Why we are still here
Trading since 1989 is a long time in this industry. It means we have supported businesses through several complete changes in how technology works, and it means a number of our clients have been with us for a very long time.
It also means we are not going anywhere, which matters more than it sounds. If you have bespoke software, you need the people who built it to still be around.
Where we are
65 Castle Street, Hull, HU1 1SD. In the middle of the city, not on a business park somewhere else in the county. If you want to come in and talk something through, give us a ring and we will put the kettle on.

Five things we hold ourselves to
Say it plainly
If we cannot explain what we are doing and why, in language you can check, we do not understand it well enough ourselves. Asked what helps most, one small business owner in Beetroot Consulting's 2025 research answered: "Simple language helps."
Fix the cause
Closing the same ticket every month is not support. We would rather spend an afternoon on why it keeps happening.
Tell you when the answer is no
Sometimes the honest answer is that you do not need what you are asking for, or that a package beats bespoke. We say so.
Still our own
Independent and family run since 1989. We have not been bought by a group, which means the people who decide how you are looked after are the people you can ring.
Own it

The people who will answer the phone
The three directors, and the people you are most likely to deal with first. The rest of the team are not on here on purpose: they did not choose a public facing job, and we are not going to spend their privacy to decorate a website.

Joined as an apprentice and never left. Runs operations and keeps the day to day moving, which mostly means making sure what we said we would do is what actually happens.

Long enough that some of the software we wrote is older than the businesses now running it.
Built to last
The install disks, from 1999
Seven floppy disks, dated the 23rd of July 1999. Some of the software on them is still running in production today, which is a longer support commitment than most companies make and a longer one than we would have promised at the time.
The phone number on the label is still our phone number. So is the tick.
It is not even the oldest. A beam calculation program we wrote around thirty years ago is still in daily use. The company that commissioned it was bought out, and three years later the new owner came back to us, while moving into brand new offices and a yard, and asked us to carry it onto a laptop and set up a backup that runs on its own. They could have bought anything. They kept the thirty year old program.
